Bingo Back on the Rise in the UK
The BBC recently reported that the popularity of bingo is back on the rise with some exciting things to come in a new 1,000 seat bingo club scheduled to open this month in Southampton.
The new club concept is designed to attract a younger demographic while not losing the interest of diehard traditional bingo players.
The new trend in bingo across the UK is to mix things up a bit. One Mecca Bingo club recently offered nightclub atmosphere to accompany the bingo games complete with music and drinks with a traditional bingo room occupying just half of the club.
This lively area of the club will allow chat or text during the game, which would have some old school players confused. How can you possibly hear the numbers being called? How can the players focus on the game? This is where electronic bingo will likely come in handy like never before.
“It’s a shush-free environment, where music and talk is allowed,” said Stuart Colthart, Mecca Bingo’s area manager.
“You get quite a good buzz in here.”
“This is my second night this week,” said one of the players in attendance, 28-year-old Chris, whose friends think bingo is rather uncool.
“I don’t know if it’s cool, but most of the people in here are not old,” said another player, 32-year-old Lisa.
“We get up to 10 people round the table on someone’s birthday. It’s a whole family thing.”
“We’re not necessarily after 18-24 year-olds,” said Colthart. “If we could get the average age down to 41 or 45, we’d be happy.”
The UK can expect to see more club openings from major clubs like Gala and Mecca.
